Why this story?

Behind the comedy, temptation and larger-than-life world of the Seven Deadly Sins is a very human story about loneliness, self-worth and the pressure to become the person we think the world wants us to be. It asks what happens when we spend so long focusing on everything we believe is wrong with us that we lose sight of everything that makes us worth knowing. That question feels particularly important when telling LGBTQ+ stories. For generations, LGBTQ+ people have been made to feel that simply being themselves is something to hide, apologise for or even regard as sinful. Seven deliberately takes the language of sin, judgement and redemption and turns it on its head. It's LGBTQ+ characters are not defined by shame or treated as problems to be solved. Their identities simply form part of who they are, while their struggles with love, loneliness, rejection and belonging are allowed to be messy, funny and recognisably human. Mental health and emotional isolation sit at the heart of the story too. Seven explores the damage caused by comparison, low self-worth and the belief that everyone else is coping better than we are. It looks at the masks people wear, the mistakes they make when they are hurting, and how easily loneliness can convince someone that they are unwanted or beyond help.
